TOLLING THE BOATS MEMORIAL CEREMONY

The Tennessee Submarine Memorial Association (TSMA) and the Volunteer Base (Nashville) of the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc. (USSVI) invite you to join us for the annual “Tolling the Boats” memorial ceremony.  

The event, commemorating lost U.S. submarines and their crews, will be held at the Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery (McCrory Lane) on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. [Not the National Cemetery in Madison]  Please RSVP for the event so we can plan to accommodate our guests.

The Tolling will reflect on the service and valor of the 3,888 men who volunteered for arduous duty under the seas, mostly in combat, aboard the 67 U.S. submarines lost.

The keynote speaker for the 2021 Tolling was retired U.S. Ambassador Charles R. Bowers who offered poignant and heartfelt remarks about American submariners. [Link]

Ambassador Bowers said, in part:

In the darkest days of the Nazi onslaught over the skies of England, Prime Minister Winston Churchill paid tribute to the intrepid RAF airmen defending the beleaguered island, when he said, and I quote: “Never in the field of conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” With the advantage of time and hindsight, perhaps Sir Winton would have said, “ALMOST NEVER, …” had he known about the sacrifices and the importance of the efforts of the men of the United States Submarine Service.
